Barely Mourned Death

Journal Entry: Fri Jul 17, 2009, 1:35 PM
HBP Spoiler -- Shame on you if you have not seen or read it yet

Lightning Struck Tower

The cruel death of a brother,
When already bereft of father and mother.
The murder of one so patient and wise,
Half-moon spectatcles, ancient eyes.

An ambiguous plea,
"Severus... please."
A promise kept,
A wand sideways swept.

Green light flashes and slams him back,
His body falls, fade to black.
Friend and mentor, shining light,
Go not quiet into that good night.

The only major problems I have with the movie versions of OOTP and HBP are the lack of fierce emotion from Harry when two of the most important people in his life ARE MURDERED!!! Jeebus, fuckin' break something Harry! When I read OOTP, there was so much tension, so much emotion that I myself wanted to break every single thing in Dumbledore's office. And when Dumbledore falls over the side of the tower I just wanted to tear Snape limb from limb (even though he's always been my favorite character).

And then... the watered-down movie endings. Harry is so calm at the end of both OOTP and HBP. What the F? I can't stand it. I wanted to see Harry break the spindly gizmos and see Dumbledore quietly respect Harry's pain. I wanted to SEE Dumbledore's funeral! I wanted Harry and Ginny to weepily hold each other in front of a white tomb!! Like that would have taken so much more time to film?!? Bah!

ANYWAY! ... to allay my frustrations, I wrote the above poem. I hope you enjoy it. Comments on the movies and the poem are welcomed, friends.

poem=EXCELLENT!

Movie: The movie was very excellent I thought. I mean I love Severus and Draco so much that those are the two I paid the most attention to......I think to the point where I don't pay attention to Harry.....

Thank you very much.

And I understand how you could be apt to pay less attention to Harry (... at least in this one). He wasn't nearly as engaging to me in this one. I feel like the tension went slack on the whole Harry-paranoia about Snape and Draco. But yeah -- my FAVORITE scene was the one with Draco in the bathroom. Mother fuckin jackpot! Felton was so good and I really got the sense of teenage anger and the way boys used to (cuz I'm 25 ) fight in high school.

And of course, Snape being my favorite character in all of HP and Rickman being unceasingly delightful. ;)

I AGREE WITH YOU. That is my major beef with the recent movies. Those things are SO important and they just skimmed right over them. Though I did bawl my eyes out as Harry wept in Ginny's arms over Dumbledore's body. Sigh.

Deep deep deep HP love!!!

Honestly my favorite moment in ALL of the books is when Harry trashes Dumbledore's office -- because Dumbledore patiently lets him and because I know as a teenager (and even as an adult) I sometimes feel like I want to break a whole room. Sometimes my grief is so deep I feel like I can either be swallowed by it or I can crush something. And unfortunately for me, I've never had a friend (like Dumbly) who can watch me rage and then offer uncondition support. It's just heartbreakingly beautiful.

But yeah, it WAS nice having Ginny hold Harry... so sweet :faint: Loved that part :)

I love the raw emotion in both Felton's and Rickman's faces as they played their parts. Draco was pulled off better than ever and when Sev had to kill Dumbledore, you could see how hard it was for him to actually do it. I was the only one in the theater that was literately bouncing in my seat and saying Dumbledore's last two lines as I watched Sev's face! I was immensely pleased with this one. it was made so much better than the other ones.

Now in my opinion, its a god damn good thing that they are making the 7th into 2 movies because of one fact: There is NO ROOM to cut ANYTHING from the books out. They have to leave it all in. I am so looking forward to the huge battle but at the same time I don't want it cuz it means Sev dies! =(

Weasleys Wizarding Wheezes was fricken amazing! it was better than I thought it would be! I mean you had to take everything you thought the joke shop would look like and like erase it from your brain because it was 100 times better!

My big disappointments were that Slughorn wasn't as fat as I pictured him and the fact that they cut out a few good scenes, like the Dursleys. They also cut out Sev's line "DON'T CALL ME A COWARD!" I mean REALLY!? Of all the things to cut out they had to cut THAT LINE! that was a very crucial line.

They also didn't do a good job of explaining the Horncruxes in my opinion nor did they explain what Severus meant by him being the Half Blood Prince

But my two favorite points in the movie was the interaction between Severus and Draco and the raw emotion in Sev's face as he killed Dumbledore. While I think they could have done a better job of mourning Dumbledore's death, that was one of my favorite scenes of the entire movie

You're right that this one is very well made in comparison to the other ones. And I am dying to see DH 7.

Sorry, sent it early...

I'm dying to see DH 7.1! Can't wait!

And I agree, too, that they could have gone into more detail about WHY and how Snape was the HBP! I mean it's in the freakin title! If this wasn't his movie then at least he was a major feature in it and we didn't see nearly enough of him.

But so much for my criticisms. I did enjoy it and I will be seeing at least once more in the theater. :)
